Definition

Validation is the process of testing hypotheses to gain insights into whether an idea will be successful or not. This can be done through interviews, observations and experiments, and conclusions and recommendations are made based on the results.

Validation of ideas comes after the ideation phase and lasts well into the incubation phase. During incubation, managers have decided to invest in learning more about an idea and resources have been allocated to the idea teams to carry out relevant testing. To ensure that resources are not spent on invalid ideas it is critical to first test the most important hypotheses. One such hypothesis is e.g. the assumption that users actually want the solution proposed.

There are different types of validation; market validation, technology validation, business model validation etc.
