Cutting energy and waste, 341 ideas at a time

Bühler

To hit its sustainability targets, Bühler challenged its people to cut energy and waste by 30% — engaging 5,500 employees, surfacing 341 ideas and accelerating five projects.

The Challenge

Bühler set two concrete sustainability targets and turned them into a company-wide challenge: reduce energy consumption by 30%, and reduce waste by 30%.

What we did

Nosco designed the innovation challenge and worked with Bühler to plan and run it, opening idea submission to every employee. Nosco facilitated the screening process that selected the eight strongest idea authors, then helped form cross-functional teams covering each business function they'd need. Nosco coached the teams and facilitated a three-day maturation workshop where they developed their concepts further, and trained participants along the way to build their own innovation capability. Once a team had built an MVP, Nosco gave feedback over a further twelve months as they worked to prove scalability and gauge whether the idea could attract new customers.

Results

The challenge engaged 5,500 employees and surfaced 341 ideas, with five projects accelerated into development.
