Definition
Ideation is the creative process of conceiving and shaping new ideas. It includes everything from the first thought or inspiration to the formulation of an idea. In the context of an innovation challenge, it refers to the initial phase in which ideas are submitted online and developed with the input of others.
Ideation can be a structured process, e.g. as a brainstorming session or based on a call for ideas, or it can be informal as a result of work done otherwise. Some scholars and practitioners believe in leaving space for Ideation as part of a job description, while some point to the fact that it cannot be forced and needs time to emerge.
In a corporate context, ideas often emerge in collaboration with others, so it can be hard to attribute ideas to a specific person in a company.
