Definition

Idea management is the structured process of managing ideas from ideation through evaluation and refinement to selection. Many companies use an idea management platform to support this process (the Nosco platform is an example of this).

Structured idea management makes sure that ideas are channeled to the right people and given due attention. Idea management thus involves setting up submission forms and processes for evaluating ideas and taking them forward.

Without a formal idea management process, the success of ideas is very dependent on the open-mindedness of the immediate manager or random interactions with other decision-makers in the organization. For would-be corporate entrepreneurs, this can be very frustrating and lead to suboptimal results.

Getting an idea management platform off the ground is often more about people than tooling — see our 6 ways to encourage adoption of idea management software. Comparing platforms?
