Pretotyping is a rapid experimentation technique used to test whether users are truly interested in a proposed idea — before building any functional prototype. The goal is to answer the question: “Should we build it?” rather than “Can we build it?”
This method sits even earlier than Early-stage Prototyping in the innovation process and focuses on validating core assumptions about user behavior. A pretotype might involve simulating a service manually, offering a landing page without a product behind it, or observing reactions to a mock concept. It's fast, low-cost, and high-learning.
Pretotyping supports Hypothesis Testing and Validation by offering real-world signals before any significant investment. It reduces the risk of building something nobody wants by testing demand in the most lightweight way possible.
The strength of pretotyping lies in its simplicity. Instead of developing features or interfaces, teams test engagement, behavior, or intent using minimal effort. For example, tracking click-through rates on a concept ad can be more revealing than a lengthy product demo.
